Classical Music of North India

Level 1: August 8 - 14
Level 2: August 15 - 21

This course gives students an introduction into the theory and practice of the classical instruments of Hindustani Music: sitar, tabla, and vocal.  Students will be given knowledge of Raga Sangeet and the context surrounding this sacred music.
The course will be taught in traditional style following certain rules regarding the instruments, practice, fellow students and Guru. For those students pursuing music as a source of sadhana. Level 1 mandatory for Level 2.  .


MRS HASU PATEL
Mrs HASU PATEL, a disciple of sitar legend Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib, is one of the few world-class female artists performing today classical music on sitar, the most popular string instrument of India. She founded The Sursangam School of Music, where students learn sitar, tabla and vocal music. Born in the culturally rich city of Baroda, India, Hasu began her musical studies in early childhood. At the age of 10, she made her first public appearance. She had many years of rigorous training under her illustrious Gurus Prof. N.B. Kikani and Ustad Anwar Khan Sahib. She is the first woman to receive a music degree with a Gold medal in the 75-year history of the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda, India. At the age of 21, she won the first prize in the State of Gujarat for the stringed instrument competition held by All India Radio. Registration
Level I Course starts at 8am on August 8 and ends at 4pm on August 14
Level 2 Course starts at 8am on August 15 and ends at 4pm on August 21.

We suggest that you arrive one day earlier, on August 7.  

Course Fee (excluding accommodation)
Level 1 tuition for one option: sitar OR tabla OR vocal  $150 (Level 1 & 2 $300)
Level 1 tuition for two options: sitar/tabla OR sitar/vocal OR tabla/vocal  $300 (Level 1 & 2 $600)
Level 1 tuition for three options: sitar/tabla/vocal $450 (Level 1 & 2 $900)

Accommodation fees
Please add accommodation for 7 nights from the night of August 7th to the night of August 13th (or 14 nights for Levels 1 & 2). For fees, please go to accommodation
 Please note that students will need to bring their instruments.
